State Forester Seeks Hardwood Industry Help

Dear Barry [Cook]
[WV State Forester],

Thank you for reaching out and expressing your support for the inclusion of the hardwoods industry in the $16 billion trade relief package that was recently announced by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for those in the agricultural community who have been negatively impacted by Chinese retaliatory tariffs. I could not agree more. In West Virginia alone, these tariffs have already led to an estimated $37 million impact on businesses, farmers, and manufactures.

On June 19, I sent the attached letter to my friend USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue urging him to include this industry in the trade assistance package. I have also discussed this issue with him directly. As a former Governor, I understand the importance of local and state businesses, and I recognize that farmers and small businesses are the backbone of the American economy. As your Senator, I will continue to fight for our hardwoods industry and for all West Virginians.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me and contributing your unique voice and perspective to this discussion. If I may be of further assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

With warmest regards,

Joe Manchin III
United States Senator
